Independent study research should be used to create notes that the learner can use to better understand information and concepts relating to the course. While trying to research topics, learners are copying research information verbatim from sources rather than making topic notes in language/verbiage that makes the most sense to them. The analogy is, I am gathering information on a topic to teach a new English speaker or ESL learner, what words and imagery would I use to help them understand the information.

Breaking the topic down into 4 questions to answer, can help guide the researcher into better understanding of the topic.

  1. Who wrote this article? Is it a reliable source?
  2. What is the topic?
  3. What am I trying to know about it? (Can lead to other questions such as where and how).
  4. Why is it important to know this information?
