Challenge: You Must Write an Essay
My challenge is learning outcomes in a first semester Communication Course, that require students to demonstrate their ability to conduct academic research, form a thesis statement, and incorporate research to support their writing. Students don’t want to write an essay (or are overwhelmed by it, are underprepared, etc). My challenge is to add choice of output into the assignment to try to motivate students out of the “I’ll never use this” slump they get into, while still meeting the learning outcomes.
