WIIFM as a Radiation Therapy Student
What’s in it for me? The first thing that comes to mind is the lack of humility in this question. However, that is easy for me to say as I have “been there and done that” as it were. One cannot blame a student because they still have to see the forest for the trees and need to understand the importance of their role as a health care worker. The ultimate goal for a HSW is patient centered care. So you ask, what’s in it for me? As the former indicates, the curing or relieving of symptoms of a cancer patient for us radiation therapists. We can do this by:
- explaining safe practices, and their integration into the workplace and practice
- learning management systems
- managing individualized care plans
- collaborating effectively in an interprofessional team, developing optimal strategies for patients
- delivering prescribed radiation
- applying critical thinking at all times
- All based on your knowledge, skills, behaviour and judgment gained from being a student
- engaging in reflective practice (self-assessment), to continue to push the boundaries of healthcare and your own as a health care worker
- Evaluate your own strengths and challenges
- continuous professional development
- becoming an advocate for patients, and engaging them in their care
- taking responsibility for our actions à your learning and ultimately your delivery of care
