When I think about what a business analyst needs to succeed, it most certainly is a diverse set of skills, tools, techniques, methods and models they can draw upon to tackle any project. The key is to understand the purpose and capability of each element and how to apply it, as well as choosing the right combination of these elements (their methodology)  according to the scope and scale of a given project. It seems an appropriate metaphoric role for teaching business analysts is being a Trail Guide.

As their Trail Guide my approach is to help my students:

  • prepare for the trail ahead (whatever form it takes or obstacles it presents – the scale and scope of the project)
  • understand the gear that is available to them when choosing what goes in their backpack (their methodology), so they are best prepared for the trail
  • understand that they will always find new gear to use, and there is always room for more in their backpack!
  • realize that no two trails are the same; you must customize your set of gear for each trail.
