Building others through recognition

One skill that helps build stronger teams is the ability to give positive recognition and appreciation to others on the team as well as identifying strengths in others. Unfortunately, students sometimes see this skill as phoney, silly, or fake.

I ask students to think about the last time they felt they should have received appreciation (even a simple thank you) for something they did – whether it was at school, work, or home. And nothing happened! How did they feel? Similarly, they were part of a team – again at school, work, or home – and the leader constantly criticized them and pointed out mistakes and errors. There wasn’t any positive feedback of any kind. Again, how did they feel?

Analogy – think of film in a camera. We would look at the positives (i.e., the pictures) rather than the negatives. In business, when a company wants to hire someone, the company looks for the positives in the person and what he/she can bring to the table and the organization. Unfortunately, more times than not, when the person starts working for the company, the boss/manager tends to focus on the things the person does wrong i.e., the negatives. People normally don’t leave their companies – they leave their boss/manager due to a lack of appreciation.
