Consider This Activity
I was able to find the attached image, “Essay structure diagram by a grade seven student” on Flickr. The creator, teachandlearn, has chosen to share this image under a CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 licence. My students really seem to struggle with how to oragnize their thoughts into a final academic research essay, and I love this simple visual rendering of the necessary components. I found this image by doing a Google advanced search for “thesis statement” AND “essay structure”, and then limited my results to images with Creative Commons licences. There aren’t any people in my image, so I’m not sure the diversity and inclusion component is an immediately obvious question. That said, at this point, I think most people, regardless of culture have some familiarity with a hamburger. McDonald’s is worldwide at this point, and I know my school loves to welcome international students with a welcome BBQ where they are served – hamburgers. So in this sense, I suppose a hamburger is more inclusive than comparing it to the layers in a timpano (for example), but I suppose it’s also stereotypically American.
