I’ve been teaching students how to use Cornell Notes for over a decade now, so it was nice to have a personal reminder of the experience. I think the key thing here is to provide space and structure to help students learn how to use the template. It can be a bit of a challenge to do this in a word document, as tables aren’t always friendly to alternate uses or hitting enter/tab to make things ‘look pretty’. We also can’t just teach the method and say, ok, go! I like the suggestion to come back to the notes at the end of class and provide activities for students to fill out the left hand column and the summary. We’ve got to be flexible, so having students give an oral summary might work better for them than a written one. Acknowledging that this might not work for all subject or all learning preferences is also key.
