Motivations – Top Three

  1. Faculty development opportunities – I feel that it is important to have faculty development opportunities available to faculty. These professional development workshops, seminars, webinars etc. could provide opportunities for faculty to learn new tools and skills that they could incorporate into their teaching practices in order to engage their learners.
  2. Promotion of new networks among members at institutions – I love how SoTL promotes collaboration between members in order to network and share their ideas on their own teaching and learning practices. This will promote teaching growth within the institution.
  3. Renewed excitement about teaching and learning, and greater self-awareness – It is important as educators to try new things in their teaching. SoTL can bring self-awareness about your own teaching practice, what works well, what you might change, and new tools you could incorporate to engage learners.

Charlotte mentioned that attending and presenting at pedagogical conferences/meetings or even discussing ideas with your colleagues is a great way to collaborate and hear about new ideas. I agree! When I presented, and attended workshops, at the Focus on Teaching Conference this year, I learned so many new things. It is refreshing to hear new ideas that I can apply within my learning environment.
