I choose to access this site’s collection by entering ‘The Mona Lisa’ – considered an
archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, and has been described as “the best
known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied
work of art in the world”. The OER provided The Serious and the Smirk – The Smile in
Portraiture
By Nicholas Jeeves
Why do we so seldom see people smiling in painted portraits? Nicholas Jeeves
explores the history of the smile through the ages of portraiture, from Da Vinci’s Mona
Lisa to Alexander Gardner’s photographs of Abraham Lincoln.

The Public Domain Review was founded in 2011, it is an online journal and not-for-profit
project dedicated to the exploration of curious and compelling works from the history of
art, literature, and ideas. The focus is on works which have now fallen into the public
domain, that vast commons of out-of-copyright material that everyone is free to enjoy,
share, and build upon without restriction.
