A key topic in the course I teach, Goals and Motivation, is goal setting. We look at SMART goal setting in-depth and I was happy to find an activity that will help students set goals as well as one that explains SMART goal setting in detail. Another video resource focuses on OKRs but I like how it gives a different perspective and how it focuses on the importance of the “why” of a goal.

Resource 1: Why the secret to success is setting the right goals – John Doerr. OER Source: OASIS

This video resource is really thought-provoking on how important the “why” is with regards to goal setting. It also gives a good perspective on another way to set goals and using OKRs.

Resource 2: SMART goals help you achieve success by Ann Chastain. OER Source: MERLOT

This article provides a great overview of SMART goals and what they encompass. The only thing that is missing is examples of SMART goals but I really like how well laid out the definitions are here and the questions asked.

Resource 3: SMART Goal Setting by Rob Harrison. OER Source: eCampusOntario H5P Studio

This is an interactive activity that helps individuals create SMART goals and then they can export the goal to be used in an assignment or for personal use. I personally do have an assessment where students have to come up with 5 SMART goals of their own and this tool could be really useful for providing students with the exact guideline on how to start and successfully set their goals. It is also a tool they could save and use in the future to set goals.
