I have actually used a Padlet like this more than once in my course and it works well. The goals with this introductory activity are to:

1. create a sense of community, which is particularly difficult in online courses
2. learn where my students currently are and their linguistic backgrounds/needs
3. prompt a particular question that they can answer along with their ‘pin’
4. have a little fun getting to know each other in a low stress environment
