Case analysis is commonly used in management courses to provide students the opportunity to practice and improve their critical thinking, decision making, and systematic analysis skills using real business scenarios.

Formal teaching and learning material provided to students can include a set of questions to guide students through the analysis, a step-by-step methodology for conducting the analysis, as well as different frameworks and tools. However, the following foundational skills can make the process easier, more enjoyable, and more meaningful for students:

  • Reading through a large amount of information and extracting key points
  • Identify the most relevant and appropriate frameworks/tools to use for analysis
  • Integrating and aggregating the insights gained from detailed analysis to create the big picture and to gain a holistic understanding of the situation

These skills are difficult to teach directly and mastering them requires time, patience and practice.
