Projects are monitored and controlled throughout their life cycle so that, if anything is threatening the successful completion as planned, the project manager and team can make necessary adjustments i.e. corrective actions to achieve successful completion.  This is like driving a car:

As we drive, we are constantly monitoring our surroundings – other cars, pedestrians, traffic lights, etc. so that we can react to avoid harm to ourselves, to others and to our car.  We control our driving by following the rules – leaving in time to arrive when needed, driving at the speed limit, stopping for red lights, driving in our lane, etc.  Thanks to our monitoring and controlling, we arrive at our destination safely and on time.

In project procurement, we use the example of buying a car to practice concepts that are being learned.  This exercise will add additional aspects e.g. monitoring and controlling that I hadn’t thought about before now.
