Often for my students the misconception is that they aren’t good at school and won’t be successful.  It doesn’t fall exactly into the idea of a concept, but it is the biggest hurdle.

This is usually the result of an adult who struggled in high school for any number of life reasons that impacted their childhood.

An analogy that I use is the butterfly that was once a caterpillar.  The caterpillar could not fly because of who it was and it’s circumstance at the time.  If a butterfly emerged from a chrysalis and didn’t notice that everything has changed for it then it would never fly.

Everything has changed for my students, they are adults now and have a good handle on their goals.  College is a different atmosphere – ideally more mature – from high school.  And they have control of their success now.   They can fly
