In the post-graduate BMT program we use case-based pedagogy to teach and learn the various aspects of business administration, functioning, and management. This requires students to consider the details of a case and provide recommendations on how to move forward. What often gets lost in the analytical process is the modules context.

In my first teaching iteration using this pedagogy I asked students to structure their case analysis in a format that was meaningful to them. I wanted students to be creative (i.e. using mind maps etc.). In most cases, students/groups were able to summarize and analyze the case details but unable to contextualize their analysis. They often reached the obvious solution without considering the not so obvious alternatives.
