Reading: It’s Like Driving a Car!
Reading plays a major role in elementary school classrooms. Reading is a difficult skill for students to master because there are a number of skills a student must acquire in order to become a good reader. There are five components of reading. These include vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, and fluency.
As a future elementary school teacher, there are various activities that I can use to help students acquire these five components. In order to teach vocabulary, I will read to students frequently, use a word wall in my classroom, and incorporate media (i.e. videos and songs) into my lessons. To teach phonics, I plan to use the Jolly Phonics program. Moreover, I will teach phonemic awareness by exposing students to rhymes, and syllables. I intend to teach reading comprehension by giving students the strategies they need to choose a book that is “just right”. Furthermore, I will give students plenty of opportunities to read independently and with a partner. Finally, I will teach fluency by teaching students reading strategies (i.e. how to sound out words, how to read difficult words), and through activities like Reader’s Theatre that allow students to read the same text repeatedly.
