Creating a syllabus in an online course is like driving a car because there are a lot of considerations that I think the creators of the syllabus make without maybe being cognizant of them. So great thing for us that Maureen Glynn created the Online Course Design for Humans workbook and released it as an OER, because I think that she really gave us a breakdown of all the considerations we may make automatically when envisioning an online course. This gives us the chance to make a course that has a more clearly defined environment for the learners.

So to create a good syllabus, you need to be skilled in simultaneously designing:

  • Access and entry points
  • Wayfinding throughout the course
  • Purposeful/Contextual Times and Spaces
  • Purposeful use of educational technologies
  • Learning materials and content
  • Emergency plans
  • Smooth transitions away from the course

And that’s not to mention envisioning engaging learning activities and assessments! Lots going on there!
