For my work in teaching, I see the process of teaching and learning as akin to an orchestra:

While the conductor might serve an important function, the students, or musicians are the ones who need to work together, in groups as well as their own individual efforts, to produce music. It stresses the collaborative spirit of learning and teaching rather than it being top down, and also provides a means for other conductors to serve in a guiding role for the classroom/orchestra through peer teaching, think-pair-share activities and the like.  Additionally, while I like the pace-setting role of the conductor as a metaphor for the instructor, I appreciate that the conductor responds to what they’re seeing and hearing and in turn adjusts to feedback or music produced.
