Top three statements that would motivate me to do SoTL are these:

  1. Improved outcomes and assessment scores—Ultimately, whatever I do or try to do (e.g. testing strategies in SoTL projects) is so that my students have the best opportunities to learn and succeed.
  2. Scholarship opportunities in the form of presentations and publications—Presentations and publications are things I aspire to accomplish one day. For now, I need to gain SoTL experience and build up my confidence.
  3. Renewed excitement about teaching and learning, and greater self-awareness—This statement aligns with the final characteristic I listed about SoTL. I think doing SoTL, instead of reading about other people’s SoTL, brings me closer to my teaching and my student’s learning because information gained from SoTL can reveal and/or close gaps between what we hope to achieve and what is currently happening in the classroom. In this way, SoTL leads to greater awareness of and revitalizes my teaching practice.
