Great to see this here, as we directly address (and use the phrasing!) of WIIFM in our Group Dynamics course. Many students see the course as workplace preparation only, but there are so many other applications as it’s nearly impossible to exist in the world without interacting with others. Here’s a short list of motivating factors we’ve discussed and heard from students:

  • Improved family, friend, roommate, and romantic relationships.
  • Empowerment through discussion of varying leadership styles for varying situations (e.g. everyone is a leader, risk taking).
  • A safe, structured environment to practice challenging interpersonal concepts.
  • Support and strategies for dealing with uncertainty and having to make decisions with limited information.
  • The skill of giving and receiving feedback.
  • As students run the class, it is what they make it, so why not make it fun?
  • Seeing that others have similar hesitations to group work – you are not alone.
  • There is usually a huge amount of personal development and reflection in students over the 15 weeks of the course (or even in the 4-week condensed version) – unlike any other course.
  • The effort and energy involved in this course pays off over a lifetime. You might not like it now, but students come back to us later in their program citing this course as their most influential.
  • Many of the relationships formed in this class in students’ first term are maintained over years.
