If I were to be asked this question of my learners, I would outline the following points:

  1. Learn about the cultural foundation of many ideas and tropes we still use today (e.g., the witch motif)
  2. Develop the clarity and conciseness of your writing
  3. Provide you with opportunities to develop research skills
  4. Translate historical research into a variety of different modalities (e.g., podcast, art, exhibition, etc.)
  5. Practice how to communicate your research to a variety of different audiences
  6. Build skills in group work and conversation
  7. Build competency in talking about hard subjects in an accountable learning environment
  8. Develop the skills of a historian in data processing and translation
