Here are some examples of WIIFM for students in the medical science courses that I help teach:

  • Content and topics that are relevant for my career aspirations (medical, dental, and grad school)
  • Apply course concepts to real world application and scientific controversial topics in the media
  • Understand common diseases that are applicable in personal lives where students can have a better understanding of illnesses in families and personal lives
  • Develop more transferable/ soft skills that can and will be useful in their future goals

At the beginning of the course, I have students write down their main goals of the course along with how the plan to achieve them. I then have students refer back to these goals a few times throughout the course to see if they need to re-evaluate their goals. At the end I have the reflect on if they achieved their goals and if not, what could have been done to achieve them.
