Project Procurement is a second semester course in a 2 semester Graduate Certificate in Project Management.

I start by explaining that project procurement is about getting all the goods and services that you need to complete your project and that it is essential that these goods and/or services are

  • exactly what is needed
  • available when they are needed
  • provided by the “best for the project” providers
  • within the project budget.

Throughout the course, I use the example of buying a car  to help the students relate to the material since very few have any procurement experience or knowledge.    I also compare and contrast project procurement in the public and private sectors.

To answer WIIFM for the students, I tell them that a practical knowledge of procurement in both public and private sectors will help them stand out when they are applying for jobs and will be an important factor in the success of their projects.

I use examples from my project procurement experiences – spectacular failures e.g. where requirements/specifications were not focused on the immediate needs and subsequent successes where requirements/specifications were very focused.
