Here are seven principles.

  1. Ownership: It’s crucial to empower team members right from the beginning, giving them the ability to solve problems, generate ideas, and design systems that lead to success.
  2. Dependability: Successful idea collaboration demands that team members meet deadlines and cultivate creative stamina.
  3. Trust: When there’s mutual trust among members, they work interdependently. They genuinely listen to each other, assume the best in one another, and over time, become transparent and even vulnerable.
  4. Structure: While creative collaboration benefits from a loose and flexible structure, some level of structure is essential. This is why I appreciate design thinking—it provides a flexible framework to extract the most from the entire creative process.
  5. A Shared Vision: I’m not talking about vision statements you merely display on a wall or a website. It’s more about a shared sense of direction—a collective desire, a goal to strive for, and a mental image of what you aim to produce.
  6. Fun: The most successful collaborative groups are the ones where being together is enjoyable. Laughter and play are integral. Surprisingly, this not only boosts convergent thinking but also divergent thinking.
  7. Candor: A key insight from « Creativity Inc., » a book by one of Pixar’s co-founders, emphasizes the importance of honesty within groups. Being candid about what’s working and what’s failing allows for adjustments, iterations, and ultimately the creation of something truly remarkable.
