I often teach Michel de Certeau’s chapter on “Walking the City” in my cultural studies courses. Usually, I include static maps of cities and ask students how they would move through them, but using the Google “Arts & Culture” link, I discovered the “White City” link of Tel Aviv and its modernist architecture. I can envision an assignment in the future where I ask students to use google earth to “walk” the city virtually, and how this idea of virtually moving within the landscape challenges ideas of “the flaneur.”
