I’m an Academic Advisor and have to teach students about different degree combination options, University regulations etc.  New students often have a hard time understanding the concept of how their degree is structured.  Since most people have made a puzzle at some point in their lifetime, I like to use this analogy to explain their degree.  I explain that their 4 year degree is made up of puzzle pieces.  The first puzzle piece is their Specialization (54 credits), the second puzzle piece is their electives (66 credits) which can also be made up of additional puzzle pieces (their breadth requirements).  Together, the puzzle pieces make up their 120 credit degree.  If any pieces of their puzzle are missing (haven’t been completed), they aren’t ready to graduate.
