In engineering, students will take formulas and more importantly online free software as face value, almost as gospel. Unfortunately to the amazement and disbelief of my students when they are often found incorrect scream hari cari. It is easy to use free s/w and the all more unconditional usage when the s/w is authored by a reputable name. Yet, students do not suss out the s/w and miss use it because of their lack of understanding of the first principle of foundational theory that was used to create the s/w. They basically use it blindly without knowing the limits or anchors for when the s/w is valid and when it is not. When using this practice of asking the almighty Google for help rather than building your own foundation blocks can lead you to a path of losing your license if the wrong thing happens at the wrong time at the wrong place while using the s/w wrong.

Now I actually embrace this mistake in my teachings and lead the students purposely down that path to use something blindly so that I can teach them the consequences in a safe place without harm to themselves or others.  I have done this in my last three courses to show the impact of following blindly and over using free online s/w
