Patch Two: Adjusting instruction during a lesson

The passages that resonate with me and have often happened are: Getting through planned activities too quickly as the students may already have some understanding of the topic and also having some students fly through everything while others are getting stuck.

I have often found myself in the middle of a 3 hour lecture and realizing that the previous year’s class was able to fill the entire 3 hours without any issues and that this time around I am only halfway through and the material is just about done. Each class has their strengths and weakness’s and it is sometimes hard to gage the outcome until you start having the class conversations.  The year before, there seems to be students that were more engaged and therefore took longer for group discussions and activities which really helped some of the learners that didn’t understand the material as much. The follow year, the class seemed more disconnected for some reason and were not showing up as much, not wanting to participate in the activities and/or discussions which was a large portion of the class time. When this tends to happen I will often just take up some of the activities as a whole class instead and use my extensive background experience to fill in the gaps of time that are still related to the days topic.
