Misunderstood Activity
In upper year biology courses, we introduce new concepts coupled with different terminology. One concept which is included is the idea of a ‘consensus sequence.’ While this idea is defined with text, many students have reached out saying that it is can be challenging to understand. Currently, I also incorporate examples of sample consensus sequences using different DNA sequences. In future course offerings, I will use an analogy using a common word and create different combinations to explain the terms such as ‘consensus sequence’. To help visualize this approach I included an image of a letters to help make the topic more approachable (image credit: Sincerely Media).
