A concept that is misunderstood in air travel is that of flight pricing (fares), and the role of consolidators.

Passengers seated very close to each other have most likely all paid very different prices to be on the same flight.

An analogy to help make this concept make sense is purchasing tickets for a concert, and the role of scalpers. I have selected an image of a concert seating chart as an analogy of a seating map of an aircraft. It shows the different ‘sections’ of the arena, much like the different fare categories of flight pricing. The concept of automated concert ticket scalping bots can be compared to airfare consolidators in the sense that the tickets are essentially resold to customers via 3rd party.

This is jumping-off point for a great potential class discussion!
