Passage That Grabbed Me:

It strikes me that this is a lot like the built environment of the classroom and the LMS. Sometimes you’re stuck in a room that’s not ideal, or the technology fails you, and all you can do is express sympathy and go to the backup plan. (Or, if you’re like me, make up a backup plan on the spot.) When an environment is new to everyone, that can be a shared experience. I’m a little more concerned about the issues which we get used to – the “Moodle just works that way” and “oh yeah, there’s no bathroom on this floor” problems. How do we make sure a new member of our community learns these tips and tricks, the ones we don’t always cover in orientation and official documentation?

This resonates with me because much like a conference, our online learning environment is new to our first year students.  Even as online environment’s change, they can be new for all learners and educators.  While we may grow complacent with the issues we have on the platform, or find workaways to avoid using challenging sections of the platform, this is just avoiding the problem.  I have started to attach YouTube videos made by a colleague on how to attach documents, upload papers, and use the digital tools available to learners as part of my syllabus design.  The same colleague also shared a series of videos for educators to be more comfortable with the new online learning platform.  It is a good reminder that both students and educators can get lost in the space, but there are tips and tricks outside the syllabus that can help us navigate these spaces.

I have attached an image of a person frustrated at their computer (most likely by the latest online learning platform update).  It serves as a good reminder- both students and educators will feel this way at some point in a semester, and we should work together to learn tips and tricks to work through the problems.
