I instruct for a healthcare genetics program for clinical genetics. One misconception individuals can have upon entering the program is that they already have excellent lab skills like pipetting or manipulating tubes aseptically. This may be true for some students but the majority with prior experience likely have it from a research setting. Often this means their techniques isn’t optimal or is prone to error in various ways which ultimately could lead to incorrect patient results. Their skills would have served them well enough in research to obtain results and so they have built confidence in their abilities in that environment. The first step in our program is to introduce them to the new standards that a clinical lab requires in terms of lab skills and to bridge the gap between where their skills currently lie and where they need to be to succeed in our program.
