I chose to read patch 26 – the secret ingredients of mentoring.
When reading this passage I was hoping it would pass on some simple small secrets that would accelerate my growth as a mentor to my students. Instead I was confronted with three main themes: Feeding the brain, Cultivating the heart, and building courage. I have never found these types of simplified phrases particularly profound and I was disappointed in what I was reading at first. I have always taken more inspiration from nature and the world around me than from sayings. Later in the day a thought came to me about how mentoring a student is similar to growing a bonsai tree. An art all about guidance in my mind. Leading the small immature tree to a more mature form through a large amount of attention while also letting the tree guide you in how it should form. Think back on the brain, heart, and courage passages, I think this means I need to let the students natural tendencies guide me as I help them improve. Those with a lot of courage may need more focus from me on heart and brain and so on….
