Patch 27- Promoting Disagreement- How to Debate and Not Die
One of my favourite quotes is: “To disagree, one doesn’t have to be disagreeable.” Barry Goldwater
So this nugget stood out for me:
“Promoting disagreement may seem like a strange topic because disagreement is often associated with rudeness or awkwardness in social settings. If this was your first thought, you’d be absolutely right….However, despite the potential difficulties that come along with disagreement, it is essential in a classroom setting for intellectual engagement and development.” Matthew Ryan, Fleming College”
As a professor I want students to challenge themselves to be uncomfortable. As stated by Ryan, this is not a stance or disposition many of us enjoy. I think the best conversations are one where there can be disagreement and we can consider the viewpoints of others. In reflective practice appreciating and seeking multiple perspectives is essential.
