Virtual Field Trip: Protecting the Earth
Protecting the Earth’s Wild Places, the Human Impact Map identifies the areas of our planet’s relatively natural landscapes. It illustrates the areas of low human populations and activities, where nature is still largely untouched.
This virtual fieldtrip could be used in several ways, from environmental stewardship to further understanding the Indigenous Land Back movement. There is often a misunderstanding among settlers that the Indigenous fight to regain control of lands would mean that private homeowners would lose their lands. Rather, 89% of Canada is Crown Land. These are the lands that should be returned to Indigenous control and would not negatively impact private home and land owners. This map clearly indicates how much of Canada is still relatively untouched. Google Earth’s Protecting the Earth’s Wild Places: The Human Impact Map is accessible through the Google Earth app on mobile devices.
