What does it mean to help another?
Most students enter the social service work field to help others. When we deconstruct this with students, what they often mean is that they want to fix other’s problems. They bring their toolbox of hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers when really all they need is their heart, ears and a tissue box. To truly help is to witness pain, and to let someone know that you are truly listening. We have to teach students what needs to be in their toolbox.
