Longer, not Taller
My approach to teaching is very much that I want to build a longer table and not a taller one. I don’t want to be the knowledge keeper, I want to share what I know with them. On the first day of class, I ask the students to call my Prof Rachel (not the typical Professor last-name), because when they graduate, we’ll be colleagues, and I want to begin to ease into that type of relationship now. To me, it’s important for them to know the content so that they can act in their professional capabilities to be competent and respectful healthcare providers. I think I like the “Applied Scientists” category best from the U Waterloo page, as it showcases who I want to be, as well as who I want my students to be – individuals who can find and understand the research that exists, and use it to be the best we can be in school and in healthcare.
