For this activity, I used the search features of Library and Archives Canada.  The search engine allowed me to search for all documents that contained the words “Residential Schools”, or to select to filter the results to archives, genealogy, library, or images.  I used the images search.  there were 329 images available, which could be sorted by type.  I chose photographs.  The image I selected has a copyright on it that states it can be used for research and private study purposes only.  It is an image of the Fort Qu’Appelle Indian School in Lebret, Saskatchewan.  It may have been taken in May of 1885.  Asking learners what they see in this photograph opens up a variety of conversations about the human impacts of residential schools:  How would the parents be feeling, locked outside the fence, desperate to catch a glimpse of their children?

This image is a snapshot of one of the results of the exclusionary policies and practices that were sanctioned by the Canadian Government,  opening up space for discussion around diversity, inclusion, truth and reconciliation.

Excellent choice -the Library and Archives of Canada – thank you for reminding us about this resource. The image itself has a great notion of loneliness…
