Backwards design is like taking a road trip
Designing a course using backwards design is like taking a road trip in a car:
- Similar to acquiring a driver’s license, a course designer needs to learn the process by reading and engaging in training
- Similar to using GPS or a map, a course designer needs to determine where you’re going by creating learning outcomes.
- Similar to inviting people on a road trip, a course designer needs to know who your learners are or might be, and what they might or might not know about the trip.
- Similar to fueling the car and making sure you have road trip materials (e.g., safety kit, spare tire, snacks, etc.), a course designer needs to collect the required course materials (readings, digital tools, etc.)
Only then can the car start and the road trip can begin!
