WIIFM – What’s In It For Me?

 

I often ask the SAME question as my students… “What does this have to do with how we practice NOW in the clinical setting?” When it comes to learning about the history of nursing and the importance of various nursing theorists is probably one of the best WIIFM moments.

There’s a reason! We teach about nursing theorists so that we can learn why we practice the way we practice. Although we may not always use certain theories anymore, we need to understand why we don’t and what made us make these changes…

So……WIIFM?

  • It helps us better understand our roles & responsibilities in nursing practice
  • Promotes adherence to legal & professional practice standards
  • Guides evidence-based research and informed practice
  • Provides rationale for decision-making i.e., recognizing the contributions nursing theorists have made in healthcare contributes to how we use infection prevention and control measures/protocols in practice
  • Helps define what nurses do and how we do it
