I used to teach a selective course on occasion. So, in the very first session, I asked students why they chose this course and asked them to rate each item from 0 to 5.
1- They want to earn a higher score.
2- It contains simpler content.

3- It is more relevant to their expected overall knowledge in their field of study.

4- It is more practical in the work market.

5- It has a more convenient time slot

6- In general, the teacher makes the course worthwhile to attend.

The responses provided fascinating insights into the motivations of the students.
