In the past, in my lab classes, I usually placed students into groups of three and encouraged them to discover out who was the best at what so that they could share lab activities. I chose the group at random, so they must also hone their group work skills. Most of them found this a significant challenge because they had previously only worked with their friends. They frequently approached me and asked if they might transfer to other groups where they had close friends.
