Extend Activity #4 – WIIFM
Here is a list of WIIFM’s from student perspective on a course that I teach in my program. The course is call “Code of Standard Practice” and it is essentially an overview of the guidelines and codes that must be follow for steel building construction.
A few common questions from the students are often:
I am learning about steel detailing…
Why do I need to know what part of the contract an estimator is interested in looking at.
Why do I need to know erection tolerance when installing steel beams and columns on site, I don’t leave my office.
Why do I need to know about steel preparation and paint thickness if I’m not the one painting in the shop.
A partial simplified response to their questions would be as follows:
Why do I need to know what part of the contract an estimator is interested in looking at.
Although you will not be creating the estimate, you will still want to understand portions of the contract that may affect your part of the work. E.g. What’s included and excluded from the contract, etc.
Why do I need to know erection tolerance when installing steel beams and columns on site, I don’t leave my office.
You are responsible for the design so when you get a call from site asking why things are not fitting you need to know what tolerances are acceptable in the industry and which are beyond the limits.
Why do I need to know about steel preparation and paint thickness if I’m not the one painting in the shop.
You may not be physically painting anything but your responsibility is to note the required steel preparation, special coatings and finishes that may be required on each piece of steel by noting it correctly on the shop assembly drawing.
