I always approach my teaching (advising) in an open and honest way.  It’s one of the first things I always tell students as well: that I will be open and honest with them, that there is no judgment and that I am here to help.  I also express the fact that I hope they will be honest with me as well since that is the best way we can work together and get the most out of our meeting.

I feel that the open book is the perfect representation of my teaching philosophy.  Students appreciate this honesty and it also seems to put them at ease once I’ve explained what they can expect from me.
