Share Your SoTL Research Plan

Part -1

My research question is: How can a new holistic definition of leadership in project management be provided?

In the project management context we rely on definitions provided by institutions that standardize the practice, in our case, the Project Management Institute PMI. However, in the latest literature, there was a call to renew the definitions, especially for terms like leadership, to include worldwide awareness.

The prior research I plan to conduct aims to learn leadership concepts from indigenous ways of thinking and other perspectives than project management, including organizational, national, regional, tribal, and religious. Such perspectives still influence our leaders’ behaviour and positions; hence, we should look for holistic and cross-cultural definitions.

I plan to create an in-class activity to brainstorm leadership characteristics. The next step is to conduct a thematic analysis to identify common leadership characteristics. The last step is to cross reference and compare the identified themes with the perspectives to understand motivations and dynamics.https://pixabay.com/vectors/heart-flags-countries-united-unity-3204671/

I would start by sharing the results with the students to give them an overview and gather feedback in class. This reflection would be an opportunity to observe how the students’ understanding of leadership characteristics and challenges has developed. I plan to publish this in the next PMI Expo and the Journals of Project Management. The professional project management community would benefit from this study and could share their experiences with our students, bridging the gap between education and career.
