3 Key Characteristics of SoTL

Inquiry

  • Is a very important characteristic of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL). It involves asking questions about the teaching and learning process and then attempting to find the answers to our questions. For example, what is working for our students, what is not working, and how can I improve the course content and assessments to enhance students’ learning

creativity and imagination in the classroom

  •  Active discussions, flipped classrooms, and outside-the-box thinking allow students to engage with the material in an interesting and creative manner. We should find new ways of fostering imagination, innovation, and interaction among students to boost their success and academic excellence

Encourage effective communication

  • Effective communication is the key to success everywhere. Effective communication and critical thinking are closely intertwined. Students should be provided with the tools to develop clear and effective communication, enabling them to articulate subject-related concepts and scientific findings with a global, real-world understanding. Positive feedback, thorough observations, and active learning are other meaningful tools of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL)

My Motivations

Improving Student Outcomes: Teaching and learning are my passions and they motivate me to find new ways of teaching to improve my students’ success.

Professional Growth and Development: The scientific field is an ever-evolving universe of discovery. It is my duty as an educator, and my responsibility towards my students, to remain knowledgeable in the subjects that I teach. Thus, I keep myself updated in the field of educational research, pedagogy, and andragogy.

Current Collaborative and Cooperative Learning: I always try to attend webinars, conferences, workshops, and LCC to develop new teaching skills and create a better learning environment for my students.
