I said earlier that this is image is somewhat self explanatory. That is because in the eyes of the public domain, it would not be apparent what is happening in this situation, not entirely based on the caption. Coincidentally, this is also a concept students find difficult to visualize. In this image, a female Hispanic patient is being setup for radiation therapy treatment by an African American radiation therapist. While promoting diversity, inclusion, and gender equality, it also depicts a number of important concepts à pictures are worth 1000 words as they say! For brevity, we will stick to one: the therapists’ adjustments of the patient’s neck. Now, we do not have all the details of this patient’s treatment handy, however we can deduce that this female patient is being treated for breast cancer, and it could be advanced. Therefore, we are wary of any “normal” tissues being treated, including the oral cavity, represented by the chin. You are also accomplishing another task at the same time: straightening the patient for treatment, which internally will also straighten the spinal cord, a super important organ at risk!
This activity goes to show a quick search in an open domain allowed an important visualization of a difficult concept to grasp for learners!
