I like to use metaphors that mean something to me outside of my profession. The image is a coach and a runner. I am an avid runner and find there are many similarities to being an instructor.

Every student’s journey is different. Like runners we have different goals. In a race, there is a cutoff to finish the race and the majority are going for their own personal bests. People have their goals at different times with their own tailored training plan like students preparing for the final qualifying for the exams. There is no one solution for each student although as the coach, you can modify your plan to their goals. Studying (like a good meal plan) can help. At the end of the day, the students are on their own and we cannot run their race for them. Their journey is their own as well as their path. We support them along the way.
