In teaching genetics labs, setting up PCR based assays can be like driving a car. There are many specific instructions we give students and they have a protocol to follow. However, there is often very little detail about how to organize tubes and racks when setting up PCRs. This type of organization is important to prevent mistakes and ensure accuracy. Inexperienced students can often do perplexing things to experienced technologists simply because they don’t know any better. By taking the time to show students various ways to organize and the reasons to organize in certain ways, they can more successfully and efficiently complete the tasks we set out for them as instructors.
