WIIFM? Activity

At the start of the semester, students are often “under excited” about taking a course on Academic Communications, Reading and Writing, or Business Communications. These courses are not in their wheel house. They did not come to the College to learn how to write an essay/memo/report. They came to the College to study Engineering/Accounting/Nursing/Police Foundations, etc. I am quite familiar with the importance of stressing what is in it for them. Here is a list of some answers to the question: Why do I need to know how to communicate?

  • Communication skills are necessary both in college and once you complete your college credentials
  • Knowing how to produce college-level documents will contribute to your success in all of your courses
  • Knowing how to communicate well will help you build relationships with your professors, peers and colleagues.
  • Most job listings require communication skills
  • No matter what job you will do after you complete your studies, you will be required to communicate with others (colleagues, bosses, clients, customers, etc.)
  • Good communication skills helps you get your ideas across clearly and logically

Hi Patricia, I can relate! No one comes to College to learn how to research, yet it is such an integral part of the skills students develop.
